CompostKlikoToilet on show in Kerkrade (NL)

The CompostKlikoToilet is on show in the exhibition Everything you've always wanted to know about toilets, but were afraid to ask at Cube Design Museum in Kerkrad (NL).

The CompostKlikoToilet is constructed from a white wheelie bin in which Dutch households separate their waste. “A different wheelie bin has been added to our households almost annually in the last couple of years. Adding a compost-bin-toilet should be fine as well”, says Rianne Makkink. On top of the white wheelie bin is a box that allows you to relieve undisturbed. After your visit you throw ashes on top to neutralize the odor, covering the faeces and enriching the human manure. The collected urine, drained at the bottom of the chest, can be used for producing electricity.

Noordoostpolder

Studio Makkink & Bey’s farm in the Noordoostpolder (a region in the province of Flevoland, the Netherlands) acts as growing garden for their designs. The compost-bin-toilet is a new application of the so-called nonolet. “We use our own nonolet at the farm for over ten years now. It is an ordinary toilet, but the faeces are being caught in a plastic bag and separated from the urine. The combination of faeces and urine produces ammonia. This also goes for animal manure. This is where we are making a big mistake in our waste system. We have been working with a biological farmer to separate the two, so we can reuse the waste. Of course, human fertilizer needs to be manipulated before you can use it, just like the fertilizer of animals.”
