3111 Tangible Traces Sao Paulo, 2007

Dutch Architecture Institute NAI

The traveling exhibition Tangible Traces – Dutch Architecture and Design in the making, was designed by Studio Makkink & Bey and premiered at the 7th Architecture Biennal in Sao Paulo, 2007. As a result of globalization, standardization and commercialization the world has become more and more uniform. What does this mean for architecture and design? Tangible Traces tries to answer this question through a perspective of craftsmanship, tradition and context. These notions form the link between the following interdisciplairy work of: architectural office Onix, spatial designer Frank Havermans, textile designer Claudy Jongstra, fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe, industrial designer Hella Jongerius. illustrator Yke Schotten, photography duo Anuschka Blommers and Niels Schumm, architecture critic Roemer van Toorn. Graphic designer Joost Grootens, graphic designer Hansje van Halem and design critic Louise Schouwenberg provided the work with a graphic and theoretical backdrop. The exhibition design showed each of the works in their own disciplinary context. Each work was positioned inside a sort of work station complemented with sketches, websites and books and related items to represent the origins of the exhibited pieces.
